Study with us
At the Centre for Manufacturing and Materials (CMM), in partnership with the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME), we foster a thriving research community that is integral to our mission of addressing the major challenges faced by the manufacturing and engineering industries. Our students play a key role in driving forward our ambitious research agenda, contributing to innovations that impact industry and society on a global scale.
We welcome applications from suitably qualified self-funded or sponsored PhD candidates that relate to our current research themes. Please take a look at our postgraduate opportunities and to apply via the respective process.
Why study with us?
- Opportunities to collaborate with leading researchers in areas such as digital manufacturing, advanced materials, metrology, laser processing and joining, sustainable manufacturing, and technology and innovation management.
- Access cutting-edge laboratories and equipment, including state-of-the-art metrology systems, laser processing technology, and pilot manufacturing facilities at the AME, dubbed “the UK’s first faculty on the factory floor.”
- Benefit from strong links with global industrial partners such as Unipart Manufacturing Group and others, providing access to real-world projects and innovative solutions.
- Contribute to research that addresses critical challenges, including sustainable manufacturing, resource efficiency, and the digital transformation of manufacturing industries.
Stimulating learning environment
The Centre for Manufacturing and Materials and AME provide a dynamic and stimulating environment for research.
- Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME): A unique collaboration between Coventry University and Unipart Manufacturing Group, AME combines teaching, research, and industrial practice under one roof. This innovation hub enables hands-on research and development alongside industrial partners, ensuring students develop skills and solutions with real-world impact.
- Collaborative Facilities: Our facilities offer circa 4000 m2 of shop floor for advanced manufacturing projects, metrology validation and laser processing systems, creating an immersive environment for applied research.
- Researchers at CMM work across disciplines within the College of Engineering, Environment, and Science, promoting innovative approaches to manufacturing challenges. We collaborate closely with centres such as the Centre for Computational Science and Mathematical Modelling to address emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and Industry 4.0 solutions.
Driving Innovation and Impact
Our research is focused on real-world applications that address global challenges:
- Developing advanced materials for high-performance applications.
- Supporting zero-emission technology development for clean transportation and energy systems.
- Enabling digital manufacturing processes that optimise production and reduce waste.
- Advancing sustainable solutions for resource recovery, circular economies, and net-zero manufacturing.
