Black History Month

Taking place every October, Black History Month (BHM) recognises and celebrates the invaluable ongoing contributions of Black people to British society. It also serves as an opportunity to inspire and empower future generations.

This year’s theme – Reclaiming Narratives – will be dedicated to sharing untold success stories and recognising the intersectional narratives of Black culture.

Hear directly from our colleagues as they share what Black History Month and this year’s theme ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ mean to them personally.

Your Students' Union

This year, Your Students’ Union have organised various collaborations and initiatives to celebrate Black History Month, offering opportunities for both students and colleagues to participate. Key events will take place on the Coventry campus, with additional awareness activities happening across all Group locations.

Community Officer OduduAbasi Umo-Odiong is looking for colleagues, students, alumni and external guest speakers to get involved with activities including panel talks, networking days, crafts and chat events. For those interested in participating, please contact community.su@coventry.ac.uk.

Your Students' Union is currently focusing on two areas of interest for Black History Month:

  1. Awareness: Spotlight on Black History Month, its significance and the importance of discussing Black history, while introducing students to communities and cultures from across the globe.
  2. Action: Following the introduction of Black History Month, the focus will shift to ways in which community members, students and anyone interested can get involved. From impactful campaigns to engaging events, students are also encouraged to suggest activities for the Community Engagement team at Your Students’ Union to develop.

Updates and events will be shared on the dedicated SU webpage for Black History Month.
